Position Title: Museum Educator
Reports to: Executive Director
Status: Full-Time

Salary: $35,360/year

Position Summary:

The Museum Educator will play a crucial role in advancing the mission of the Portage County Historical Society by developing and implementing engaging educational programs that make local history accessible, relevant, and inspiring for diverse audiences. This individual will focus on creating interactive experiences for school groups, community organizations, and the public, helping to cultivate a deeper connection to the region's history. By aligning programs with state education standards and expanding outreach efforts, the Museum Educator will serve as a bridge between PCHS and the community, fostering a lasting appreciation for Portage County’s unique heritage.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Educational Program Development and Delivery

    • Design, plan, and deliver educational programs for a range of audiences, including K-12 students, family groups, and adult learners.

    • Develop curriculum-based programs and resources that align with Wisconsin’s social studies standards.

    • Collaborate with local teachers and school districts to tailor programs and materials to classroom needs, and lead field trips, classroom visits, and other interactive history lessons.

  • Community Outreach and Engagement

    • Build relationships with local schools, educators, and community groups to promote PCHS programs and increase participation.

    • Create programming targeted at specific community groups, such as retirement communities, youth organizations, and diverse cultural groups within Portage County.

    • Engage with underserved and new audiences to enhance their connection to local history through dynamic and inclusive programming.

  • Exhibit Interpretation and Event Support

    • Develop interpretive materials and guided tours that bring PCHS’s collections and exhibits to life for visitors.

    • Support special events, such as themed fundraisers and public presentations, by providing interactive elements that enrich the visitor experience.

    • Contribute content for PCHS’s social media and website to highlight educational programs.

  • Administration and Collaboration

    • Work closely with the Executive Director to ensure educational initiatives support the broader organizational goals of outreach, community engagement, and increased visitation.

    • Maintain accurate records of program attendance, feedback, and impact for grant reporting and future planning.

    • Develop and engage a robust volunteer base to maximize impact

    • Collaborate with volunteers, interns, and other staff to implement programs effectively and maximize community impact.

Qualifications:

  • Education and Experience

    • Bachelor’s degree in History, Museum Studies, Education, Public History, or a related field.

    • Previous experience in a museum, educational, or historical organization setting, with a focus on program development and public engagement preferred.

  • Skills and Abilities

    • Strong knowledge of educational best practices, including curriculum design and program assessment.

    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage audiences of all ages and backgrounds.

    • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, managing multiple projects with attention to detail and creativity.

    • Enthusiasm for innovation and technological additions to the educational experience

    • Passion for local history, community outreach, and lifelong learning.

  • Additional Requirements

    • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including some weekends and evenings, as needed.

    • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation for off-site programs.

    • Applicant must be willing to complete a background check.

    • Job requires occasionally lifting up to 50 pounds and frequent climbing of stairs.
